Introduction

In 1985, Shell introduced the Eco-marathon challenge, where student teams from all over the world can compete – to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient cars, with the hope that it may inspire future developments in the automotive industry.

The first edition of Shell Eco-marathon Africa took place in 2014 and this year in 2018, the fifth edition of Shell Eco-marathon Africa will be held from October 25 – 28 at the Zwartkops Raceway, Johannesburg.

About

The Namibia University of Science and Technology will be taking part in the Shell Eco-marathon Africa 2018, as new comers. NUST will be representing the nation as the first and only Namibian competitors ever in the history of the Challenge. The Team will be competing in the electrical battery category, which is judged by how efficiently the battery puts out power per unit distance. Due to the complex of the nature of automotive engineering, the team boasts a variety of backgrounds, including multiple disciplines, culture and gender – a true reflection of the Namibian culture and people.

Mission

The primary aim is to inspire students through competition, by sparking their interests in automotive technology and allowing them to apply their engineering, innovation and creativity skills. The Shell Eco-Marathon is an initiative that will equip students with the vital skills required for the automotive industry, domestically and globally. The ability to domestically produce efficient and affordable vehicles in near the future, will bring Namibia closer to its goal of sustainable development.
