Time: 07:30 - 15:30
Venue: Auditorium, Mining Building (E3)
THEME BACKGROUND
Industry 4.0 in the African Context
The 4th Industrial Revolution, commonly known as “Industry 4.0” (also abbreviated as I4.0 or I4), is a very broad domain that includes: intelligent production systems, robotics, smart technologies, efficiency, data management, relationship with consumers, competitiveness, and much more. It is based on the concept of a completely automated and intelligent production system, capable of communicating autonomously with the main corporate players, driven by real-time data interchange, electronics and information technologies to enable customized production. Though in its infancy in the developing world, the introduction of Industry 4.0 will have significant influence and impact in developing economies.
The Faculty of Engineering Research Day is a revolutionary event intended to bring together industry experts, academicians, researchers, and students, on an exclusive platform to explore and discuss the prospects of the Industry 4.0 in Africa. The main issue is how the Internet and intelligent systems can further revolutionize manufacturing and service industry in the African context. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Industry 4.0 and its impact on developing economies, manufacturing and service industry
- Industry 4.0 and its influence on indigenous engineering solutions, engineering education, and engineering skills
- Influence of Industry 4.0 on environmental, social, and economic sustainability
- Influence of automation, robotics and intelligent factories on productivity, efficiency and supply chain management
- Smart and green and technologies, products, services, urban transport systems, IoT systems, big data analytics, cyber-physical technologies, cloud computing
- New digital manufacturing, service and supply chain models from Industry 4.0.
- Impact of Industry 4.0 on labour markets (Work 4.0), energy sector (Energy 4.0), and logistics (Logistics 4.0)
