Geomatics Programme

Welcome to the Geomatics Programme at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.

Geomatics is the modern scientific term used for the integrated field of geodesy, surveying, mapping and geoinformatics. It can be defined as art, science and technologies related to the measurement, processing, analysis, management and visualisation of spatial data.

The Namibia University of Science and Technology offers the following qualifications in Geomatics:

The Diploma in Geomatics programme is aimed specifically at the training of survey technicians.  The programme is career and skills oriented, and excludes certain advanced subjects which are not required for general technical survey work.

The Bachelor of Geomatics programme is aimed at those who do not necessarily want to register as professional land surveyors, but who need an appropriate qualification for a career as a Geomatics Professional.

The Bachelor Honours in Geomatics complies with the minimum academic qualifications required for registration as a Professional Land Surveyor, in terms of the Professional Land Surveyors’, Technical Surveyors’ and Survey Technicians’ Act (Act 32 of 1993). The honours programme also prepares students for their ‘survey articles’, which is required for registration as a professional land surveyor. Survey articles comprise an internship under a professional land surveyor, for a period of about two years, followed by a trial survey and law examinations set by the Namibian Council for Professional Land Surveyors, Technical Surveyors and Survey Technicians (SURCON).   Only registered professional land surveyors are allowed to do cadastral surveying, which deals with the survey and demarcation of land for registration in a land registry.
