Doctor of Philosophy in Spatial Science

Description: 

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Spatial Science is aimed at equipping students with enhanced knowledge and research skills in their specialization area by creating new intelligence that will bring resolutions and achieve new ideas to the spatial sciences.
The programme will empower students to develop an in-depth understanding of relevant methodological approaches, and develop competence in fields of one or more of the subfields through involvement in research projects under supervision of experienced staff members under review of the scope of the approved research clusters of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences.
With focus on special research output in the form of a thesis, students are required to investigate, design, and conduct independent research, apply advanced methods and techniques respectively dealing with a sophisticated application problem linked to the topic of interest.

Admission Requirements: 

To be considered into this program, candidates must:

Hold a Master of Spatial Science (MSSR) qualification from recognized institutions at NQF level 9 in Spatial Science related subjects. Related cognate areas may be considered for admission to this programme.
Provide outlined work of supervised research at master degree level.

In addition, applicants will be requested to attend a pre-selection interview at the discretion of the FNRSS.

Career Possibilities: 
Graduates of the PhD programme will be able to work as university academics and researchers, consultants, senior managers in both the public and private sectors, or take up applied and interdisciplinary research positions in governmental and / or non-governmental organizations where there is increasing demand for professionals with advanced academic and technical skills in the Spatial science area.
